The English polymath Francis Galton, supposing that undesirable traits such as club foot and criminality were inherited, advocated eugenics, aiming to prevent supposedly defective people from breeding. For many years the field was dominated by behaviourism. "There is no genetic-process-only phenomena, as there is no epigenetic-only phenomena. Determinism is usually understood to preclude free will because it entails that humans cannot act otherwise than they do. In the science world, however, I kind of get the resistance: many scientists have built their careers on the idea that genes rule. Despite Beauvoir’s clarity, evolutionary psychologists famously liken contemporary humans to their hominid antecedents, claiming that modern humans are just an evolutionary Nano-second away from their predecessors who lived in caves. Gould’s criticism of selfish-gene theory brings into focus two fundamental flaws in the belief that human behaviour is genetically, biologically determined, and in so doing Gould debunks the theories of Dawkins, and Wrangham and Peterson. It was reported in the Brisbane Times that an Australian conservative party staffer had resigned after sending an email to the feminist and academic about the superiority of men, telling her to ‘get a life’ and calling her a ‘sourpuss’ for writing an opinion piece about the need for more women in parliament. endstream endobj 377 0 obj <>stream Biological Determinism. By the 1920s, many U.S. states brought in laws permitting the compulsory sterilization of people considered genetically unfit, including inmates of prisons and psychiatric hospitals. Max Tomlinson, the then media adviser to Liberal National Party Senator Ian Macdonald, wrote to Dr Ford after she published a newspaper column criticising the lack of female representation in Queensland’s parliament (Jabour 2012). It also bothers me because it makes people lazy. The battles of chimpanzees, or human genes, cannot be used to excuse, or even explain, the destructive potential of Man in Western culture that causes revolutions, wars, genocides and, more recently, the destruction of the very climates and environments that support life itself. Humans choose how they behave. To be human is to transcend biological or anthropological morphology. ( Log Out /  I don't like the thought of being at the mercy of DNA I know little about. Wrangham and Peterson found that the primate killings they witnessed explained the causal relationship between masculinity and war, and ‘simultaneously undermined the human excuses for extreme violence, such as culture, brainpower, or the punishment of an angry God’ (1996 p. 22). Our attachment to genetic determinism doesn't really jive with our (among most Americans', it seems) love of free will.
