Prince's original 1984 recording of the song was not released until 2018, when it was issued as a single by Warner Bros. Records in conjunction with his estate. The song appeared more-or-less as filler music on their album and was not released as a single and received little recognition. They added the song as "a fantastic exhibit of 90’s music". Some people never get over it. Bill Lamb from About.com wrote that O'Connor's "emotional, gutsy performance made it a classic. In an accompanying message, he wrote: "Prince's music is the soundtrack to the soulful and beautiful universe he created, and we have all been privileged to be part of that amazing world. It became the third best-selling single of 1990 and the 82nd best-selling single of the 1990s, and was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America in April 1990. As in the UK, the song spent four weeks at the top, despite competition from Jane Child ("Don't Wanna Fall in Love") and Calloway (band) ("I Wanna Be Rich"). But although Prince wrote a good break-up song…perhaps even a great one…he doesn’t perform the ultimate break-up song. "Nothing Compares 2 U" entered the Irish singles chart on January 11, 1990, reaching number one two weeks later. [7] Tom Ewing from Freaky Trigger called it a "very moving track" and added that it "captures the stasis, anger and devastation of a bad break-up with awful accuracy." Despite a fair bit of research on the subject, I can’t discover exactly how Sinead O’Connor originally came across “Nothing Compares To You”. Sinead O’Connor and her friend and record producer Nellee Hooper pulled the project together. "[2] Matthew Hocter from Albumism described it as "a song deeply rooted in emotion and despair which would go on to certify O'Connor and that song as one of music history's most unforgettable moments. [4] Jodi Cleesattle from American Eagle wrote that "there is pain in Sinead O'Connor's voice, and there probably always will be." Finally, it dropped to number two, replaced by Madonna's "Vogue". [25][26] The song was later included as the final track on Prince's 2019 posthumous compilation Originals, which contains a multitude of demo recordings Prince had made for other artists such as the Bangles and Kenny Rogers. Sinead O’Connor brought every ounce of emotion to that video too. "Nothing Compares 2 U" spent 15 weeks in the US top 40, concluding on June 30. After a while friends, family and potential suitors get the message…there might be a heart in there somewhere pumping the blood around, but the only purpose it serves now is a mechanical one. In the United States it spent four weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100; in addition, it was number one on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart and reached number two on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart (held off the top position by Rod Stewart's "This Old Heart of Mine" for three weeks). Bath Prince had never recorded the song for himself and took no interest in performing it in concerts, however, in the years after O'Connor turned it into a hit in 1990, he began performing the song live. Every time your brain has a moment to itself, your subconscious reminds you that you were never good enough for someone you cared about…and, by extension, because you couldn’t keep them in your life, you’ll never find anyone to love you and care for you. He summoned me to his house—and it's foolish to do this to an Irish woman—he said he didn't like me saying bad words in interviews. Until you wake up, all of a sudden, at 2.37am and your subconscious reminds you that the bed beside you is empty, and always will be, because you’re not good enough to have anyone love you. [24] In addition, the Prince version was given its own music video, released in conjunction with the studio recording on April 19, 2018; the video consists of edited rehearsal footage shot in the summer of 1984. The Prince Estate in collaboration with Warner Bros. Records has released the original version of Nothing Compares 2 U as recorded by Prince in 1984. But Sinead O’Connor took the same basic idea and injected it with enough heart-wrenching emotion that you felt the end of the world had just arrived and Sinead O’Connor was having to cope with the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse all on her own. Sinead O'Connor recorded the song for her second album I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got, released in 1990, where she and producer Nellee Hooper gave it a completely new arrangement. We all felt it as she told us about how she’d been left, abandoned, stranded…, It’s been seven hours and fifteen daysSince you took your love away. This version of the song will be released as two 7" vinyl singles—in picture disc and black vinyl formats. Sometimes it’s the song. That’s why being left alone hurt so much. Of all the songs Prince wrote, “Nothing Compares To You” is probably his biggest hit as a songwriter and the most iconic song of his to be made famous by another artist…but he never had a hit with it himself. Perhaps even a great break-up song. He performed duets with Rosie Gaines in concert and subsequently had a live performance released on compilation albums: 1993's The Hits/The B-Sides, and the 2006 Ultimate Prince. One of Rolling Stone Magazine’s 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, a platinum-selling record, a Number One around the world in just about any country you can think of, including the US where it spent four weeks at the top of the Billboard Chart…it might only be fair to say that nothing compares to Sinead O’Connor’s version of this amazing Prince song…. Here's the first such entry of 1990. “Nothing Compares To You” has often been described as the ultimate break-up song. This version, which O'Connor co-produced with Nellee Hooper, became a worldwide hit in 1990 and its music video received heavy rotation on MTV.
