Of course, you might think that the subject is trivial to you. The war however, was not decisive, because within a decade, the defeated city had regained its strength. an Athenian general of the First Peloponnesian War. The speech glorified Athens' achievements, designed to stir the spirits of a state till war. He became the head of the empire which was later expanded by his son, Alexander the Great. The golden age of Athenian culture flourished under the leadership of Pericles. The Thirty Years' Peace ended and the 2nd Peloponnesian War began. King Phillip II conquered Greece by leading the Macedonians in the Battle of Chaeronea to conquer Greece. Most importantly, he issued the Megarian Decree, which excluded Megara from the markets and ports of the Athenian Empire. was fought between Sparta (Peloponnesian League) and Athens (Delian League) and their allies. The battle of Potidaea was fought between Athens and a combined army from Corinth and Potidaea. The Athenians started to abuse their power in the Delian League by taking advantage of the others in the league which caused the rest of the league to be mad at them. The Peloponnesian War impacted the wealth, prestige, policies, and power of Athens that caused resentment among other city-states. Historians have traditionally divided the war into three phases. Athens makes little forays on the Peloponnese by sea and Sparta destroys areas in the countryside of Attica. This expedition was the beginning of the end of Athens and a turning point in the war because the Athens started falling. Athens is defeated attempting to support the Greek colonists in Egypt who are fighting the Persians. Corinth tried to get the help of the Spartans, but they refused to break the peace. He is regarded as the "Father of History" in Western culture. The onset of the First Peloponnesian War was the culmination of decades of tension between Athens and Sparta, granted it involved said poleis fighting directly against one another less than would be the case in following conflicts. With both men gone, the peace negotiations were successful. In the following year, the Peace of Nicias temporarily ended the fighting. Second, under the leadership of Pericles, Athens grew from a city-state to a naval empire. Finally, in 431 B.C., Sparta declared war on Athens. His History of the Peloponnesian War recounts the 5th century BC war between Sparta and Athens to the year 411 BC. The Peloponnesian War lasted for over 27 years. Sparta had the better land-based military force, and its location could not be attacked by sea. They also tore down the wall the Spartans built. This would mean starvation and ruin for the people of Megara. This ushered in the final phase of the war, generally referred to either as the Decelean War, or the Ionian War. The Spartans did this by taking control of the countryside around Athens. Athens then began to build walls between their ally city-states in the Delian League. Thucydides claimed that ‘it gave Corinth her cause for war against Athens”. One decision was building ‘walls’ connecting Athens to Piraeus (an important harbour city), making it almost impossible for a land army to attack Athens from the Peloponnese Peninsula. The Thirty Tyrants were a Spartan-imposed oligarchy that ruled Athens after the Peloponessian War. The Decelean War is the last part of the Peloponnesian War. Pericles' policy was to punish any city–state that resisted Athens. Sparta's strategy was to cut off the Athenian food supply by destroying crops. This was the final battle between Greeks and Persians that would expel the Persians from Greece. The Peloponnesian war lasted 27 years, and it occurred for many different reasons. These differences shaped the war strategy of each side. His History of the Peloponnesian War recounts the 5th century BC war between Sparta and Athens to the year 411 BC. Tolmides seized the city of Methone in Messenia but was then forced to abandon it due to the arrival of a Spartan force. The funeral oration is significant because it differed from the usual form of Athenian funeral speeches. Athens was then accredited to the expulsion of the Persians from Greece even though the war continued for another 2 years. In 458 BC Leocrates led a large Athenian fleet that engaged the Aeginetan fleet in the Saronic Gulf near Aegina. Sparta did not like Athens growing more powerful. He led the Athenian forces that conquered the island of Aegina, traditionally a naval rival of Athens. The Battle of Amphipolis, 422 BC, was an Athenian defeat in Thrace that was started by an army led by the Spartans. The war weakened all of the Greek city-states for 50 years.
