We are a group of community volunteers dedicating several evenings a week to go onto the streets of Derby to provide hot and cold food, drinks, clothing, bedding and social interaction for the homeless, rough sleepers, and vulnerable people who need our help. Derby Homes will take into account if you have spent time in prison when deciding how to treat you, even if it has been some time since you were released. Derby Homes is responsible for coordinating the city’s response to homelessness and for delivering the Council’s statutory Homelessness Services. You may need to use emergency accommodation such as a hostel, night shelter or other temporary accommodation if you have nowhere to go following your release. Derby Homes may take the view that you should have known that your criminal activity could have resulted in you being sent to prison, and that this could lead to the loss of your home. However, building new housing alone, is not enough as it does not address inadequacies within the existing private sector housing stock. It can also refer individuals to temporary secure accommodation. Our priorities are to prevent individuals from becoming homeless and to provide relief for those who are already homeless or sleeping rough. The police have identified a problem with begging in the city. Our team are out on the street most nights, and know most of Derby’s rough sleepers and where they typically bed down. We house as many people as possible, but where there is not an available home from Council or housing association stock we sign post to other types of housing such as renting from a private landlord. Our new Job Club within our Employability programme provides support to give you the skills that you need.
