Didnt he discover saturn too? Galileo Galilei (1564 – 1642) was an Italian astronomer and scientist who launched the scientific revolution and is widely considered the father of modern science. This website uses cookies to improve your experience. Galileo is most famous for his scientific hypothesis that the Earth revolves around the sun, rather than the sun revolving around Earth, as most people believed in that day. Discovered the first moons ever known to orbit a planet other than Earth. As an accomplished musician, Galileo knew that the relationship between string length and the note it produced was mathematical – this had been proved almost 2000 years earlier by the Pythagoreans in Ancient Greece. His father was a well-known composer, who played the lute, a stringed instrument. He was the eldest son of Vincenzo Galilei and Giulia Ammannati. Galileo was the first known person to study, in detail, the skies with a telescope and he is widely regarded as the “father of observational astronomy”.
