In turning the camera on himself, even in his most vulnerable moments as a sick and dying man, filmmaker and activist Marlon Riggs demonstrated the futility of divorcing the personal from the political. It also analyzes reviews to verify trustworthiness. I love this movie, all involved in the movie are brilliant. After the first week of shooting falls apart in disastrous fashion (highlighted by special effects madman Cody's [Danny McBride] four million dollar explosion failing to even get filmed), Tayback convinces Cockburn to take his core cast into the jungles of Vietnam with hidden cameras everywhere, shooting the whole thing guerilla style. Rain of Madness was originally released as an iTunes video download during Tropic Thunder's theatrical run. When Speedman asks if Lazarus ever drops character, Lazarus scoffs and (in character) replies "Man, I don't drop character 'til I've done the DVD commentary.". Osiris' real remaining family is flown in to Vietnam so that Lazarus can get to know them better, even though his sanity is obviously slipping (Downey hides under a bush at one point, tossing out bits of hot dogs in order to entice intruders; another time he's found performing an exorcism on a family member in a hotel shower). @thisthatedition directors! All the hullabaloo about the controversial jokes and subject matter generated during the movie's theatrical release aside, Tropic Thunder is a movie that serves up laugh-out-loud comedy, the kind that's so juicy it engenders more laughing out loud long after the movie ends. As a baby boomer I seldom watch any media about Vietnam. In order to navigate out of this carousel please use your heading shortcut key to navigate to the next or previous heading. Tropic Thunder is a 2008 action comedy film directed by Ben Stiller. It stars Stiller, Jack Black, Robert Downey Jr., Jay Baruchel, and Brandon T. Jackson as a group of prima donna actors making a Vietnam War film. Yes, Thunder is borderline offensive, its fantastic DVD release is weighed down by some spotty featurettes, and the "extended edition" adds very little worthwhile footage -- but, ultimately, you will be hard pressed to find a more entertaining comedy this year. "I don't read the script, the script reads me". I don't typically like gory movies, but this one made me laugh because they did such a good job of exaggerating everything to the point of silliness. Ben Stiller’s war parody film Tropic Thunder received a director’s cut release on DVD and Blu-ray in most territories that added 17 minutes to the all-star comedy flick.Stiller confirmed with This or That Edition which edition he prefers:. Ben Stiller plays an air-headed egotistical star whose one claim to fame is wearing thin on audiences after too many predictable sequels of his action adventure series, and Jack Black is a hooked on drugs movie star of a series of movies that parody Eddy Murphy's Nutty Professor roles. Downey, Jr.'s own commitment to the role is on full, glorious display here. In truth, "Rain of Madness" really gives the actors and the production team ample opportunity to show off, displaying the numerous posters of fake movies the "actors" were in (Jeff Portnoy's "Fart Club"), Cockburn's total cluelessness as a director (Coogan goes into the woods to find the tree that Tayback lost his hands at, declares that he's feeling a powerful energy from said tree, and then is told by his crew that it's the wrong tree -- twice), and Lazarus' creepy devotion to his character. If this was the ideal Blu-ray release, it would've included both the theatrical and director's cuts. Well, that's the goal, but when the reality is they have agents back home fussing over things like the lack of TiVo availability in their talents' posh hotel rooms and other less pressing matters, such as the fact that the director was killed by a real land mine, things go south in a hurry. When the discussion tackles the burning question of how Downey, Jr./Osiris/Lazarus is going to approach his latest role as Sherlock Holmes in Guy Ritchie's upcoming action-oriented take on the literary legend, it's Osiris who says, "It's elementary, my dear Watson," and then he restates the classic line with a very ghetto twist. All of that is done to immaculately set the stage for storyline. The BD-Live buffered playback off the Web will likely be a drag for most viewers connecting from home with cable Internet, which is, after all, the most likely scenario. In the face of the "retard" criticism that the real Tropic Thunder faced prior to its opening, Stiller defended it simply: Tropic Thunder isn't having a go at a serious mental condition -- it's mocking the way that such serious ailments are treated in the entertainment community, many of these maladies seized on by actors for Oscar-bait and nothing more.
