This is just an educated guess, though, and it's always possible that the production could hit another stumbling block or two on its road to the screen. Fans are still waiting for news about the RoboCop Returns sequel, which is still in development currently, but it appears that the TV series may take precedent for the time being. He's had not one, not two, but four television series, and a 2014 feature reboot (which, despite the presence of the excellent Joel Kinnaman in the lead, was terrible). There is currently no release date for RoboCop Returns, and we'll probably have to wait even longer due to the COVID-19 pandemic shutting down and delaying productions throughout much of 2020. Cookies help us deliver our Services. Maybe there is hope…. Well, I can't answer the first part of that question, but I can, and will, serve up what you should know about the long-awaited sci-fi action flick. Neill Blomkamp, the director most known for District 9, Elysium, and Chappie, has had a history of being attached to reboots of beloved sci-fi franchises in the past with his ties to a new Alien movie, so it only made sense for the South African filmmaker to take the lead on RoboCop Returns, if only for a short time. Be on the lookout, however, as these types of things seem to pop up out of nowhere, kind of like RoboCop Returns in the first place. Set in crime-ridden Detroit. Both films were written by comics legend Frank Miller, while 1990's RoboCop 2 was directed by Irvin Kershner (Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back) and 1993's RoboCop 3 was helmed by Fred Dekker (The Monster Squad). As to the involvement of Weller, all we know for sure is that when Blomkamp was attached to the project, he lobbied publicly for the star's return — although some outlets have since reported that Weller was offered the role, and turned it down. If Peter Weller won't be appearing in RoboCop Returns at least the suit he wore in the original RoboCop will. I just hope no one suffers the same fate as Paul McCrane's Emil Antonowky after he drove through the toxic waste and was melted down to mush before being run over. When people talk about the RoboCop franchise, they typically refer to the original. (Okay, there's no sugarcoating it — Dark Fate was a massive flop.) Those who hoped to see Peter Weller suit up as Alex Murphy/RoboCop in RoboCop Returns will hate to read this, but the actor has gone on the record saying that he has no desire to reprise the role in another movie. According to the scribe, Blomkamp's intention — which presumably will have rubbed off on Forsythe — was to make a "proper Verhoeven [style film], if Verhoeven had directed a movie right after RoboCop." © Watchr Media • All rights reserved, RoboCop Returns Is Back on with Little Monsters Director Abe Forsythe, Robocop Returns Loses Director Neill Blomkamp, He'll Direct New Horror Movie Instead, RoboCop Returns Will Bring Back the Silver Suit from the 1987 Movie, RoboCop Is KFC's New Colonel Sanders and It's Not a Joke, RoboCop Returns Production Update Will Get Longtime Fans Super-Hyped. Also, interestingly enough, Justin Rhodes — one of the screenwriters behind Dark Fate — has also been hired to assist Neumeier and Miner with the revision of their original script. If the stars properly align, he will talk about For Love Of The Game being the best baseball movie of all time. RoboCop announced Verhoeven, a professional provocateur, to the world — and it's safe to say that audiences saddling up for the film based on its title alone got way more than they bargained for, in the best sense of that phrase.
