The attraction of his work to film-makers is not mysterious. That’s mean, but not as mean as the people who put the scene there in the first place: McEwan, who wrote it, and Dominic Cooke, a theatre director making his uncertain film debut. Of course, she glances at him across a room full of students, his eyes meet hers, they smile, start an awkward and barely believable conversation, devoid of any substance or wit - it doesn't convey any excitement and sparks. This movie was a particular disappointment as Saoirse put in another wonderful performance and the co-star Billy Howle was also good. Their wedding night is coming, but there is a problem, Florence is afraid to have sex with Edward, the only thought of it is disgusting for her. Beautifully photographed by Sean Bobbitt, Chesil still owes most of its greatness to Dominic Cooke's direction, where the harshness of failed expectations is tempered by a love that transcends, but cannot denounce, sex. His family is poor, his father is a teacher and his mother has mental issues. Cast: Saoirse Ronan, Billy Howle, Adrian Scarborough, Anne-Marie Duff, Samuel West, Emily Watson, Bebe Cave. into the movie but to tell you more of the plot would spoil your viewing experience, you'll just have to see for yourself how it all plays out. To his credit, debuting feature director Dominic Cooke – a theatre veteran whose marvellous staging of Sondheim’s Follies lately can see him through the odd dud project – doesn’t sanitise the details of this fateful union. Rebecca, review: Lily James, wild romance, mysterious glamour – sound familiar? Her parents are richer than Edwards and they have different background and polar views on life, but still love unites them. On Chesil Beach is a story about, love, passion and fear. It's a tragedy for both of them. A reasonable watch but nothing amazing. On Chesil Beach is a film made by a first time director in Dominic Cooke. (In the book, she is repulsed by the sensation of his tongue in her mouth.) On Chesil Beach follows that particular element to a T as it follows Edward and Florence on their honeymoon. It was the last time they saw each other: Edward was free to satisfy his sexual desires, and he was even married, but it didn’t last long and Florence realized her dream and became a successful musician. But the thing is, this moment is never referenced again in the film. Certainly, they have the typical newlywed jitters but with many things left unsaid, is this a union fated to end before it even begins? These notes were contributed by members of the GradeSaver community. So Saoirse Ronan month continues and On Chesil Beach was definitely enjoyable. On Edward and Florence's honeymoon at Chesil Beach, their backgrounds and temperaments come to the fore: Edward's quickness to anger and occasional physical belligerence, and Florence's unspoken past relationship with her father, who dominated and possibly molested her. Cooke, like many a first-time director before him, gives carte blanche to a much more experienced cameraman – 12 Years a Slave’s Sean Bobbitt – who goes massively overboard with stretches of beach shingle, making the sudden distance between Florence and Edward almost parodically hard to miss. Billy Howle and Saoirse Ronan as Edward and Florence, ‘sweet and ripe with teenage awkwardness’ in On Chesil Beach. The kind of lukewarm temperature you would feel when dipping your toes into the sea. The film is pleasingly thorny on the subject of intimacy, sexual dysfunction and trauma. It is a coming-of-age movie with the awkwardness of the two parties being central. As the raging Edward lets Florence walk away, the camera withdraws until Edward is left alone on his side of the screen. Florence even offers him to have sex with other women and she wont be angry, Edward is shocked, he says that she lied in their woes. It is 1962, the year before sexual intercourse began, and a young couple are taking dinner in a Dorset hotel room on their wedding day. Metacritic Reviews. Florence is ashamed and leaves the beach. Shown in flashbacks is Act 1, the couple's meeting and falling in love. What could have been a bleak and boldly unresolved ending is undermined by a conclusion that is more traditionally sentimental – and more frustratingly resigned to love-story genre convention. Much of the movie moves through the awkward attempt at first sex, pristine by contemporary standards. | This hindsight point-scoring – about sex, too – undid the book’s veneer of sympathy for these two stricken novices, and made all of its feints in that direction quite patronising. The timing of the film is critical: 1962 really marked the watershed between the staid conservatism and goody-two-shoes-ness of the 50's and the sexual liberation of the swinging sixties. Sex is supposed to come naturally. He loves history very much and always has some history book in his pocket to read whenever he has a spare minute. It’s dangerously close to smug in its retrospective exposure of British propriety and virginal terrors in the days before the sexual revolution. Returning to their hotel room a pair of piss taking waiters insist on hanging around serving the silver service meal. Why was it there at all? A recent BBC version of The Child in Time was preceded last autumn at the Toronto film festival by two adaptations written by McEwan himself: The Children Act and On Chesil Beach, the first of his own books that he has brought to the screen since The Innocent 25 years ago. There hasn't been much fooling around beforehand. Surrounded by other couples at a screening of A Taste of Honey, they are the only ones with their eyes on the screen. Hardly ever, though, has he taken on the duty of writing his own screenplays – indeed, he renounced doing so back in the Nineties, as a painful process akin to ripping one’s own guts out. It's understated. Sheila O'Malley received a BFA in Theatre from the University of Rhode Island and a Master's in Acting from the Actors Studio MFA Program.
