The way Zola portrays Maheude as a fighter seems to be more than simple happenstance, as she later becomes the most vehement supporter of and advocate for the strike - her anger and determination outlasting that of even Etienne's. The father of the family Maheu was the leader of his group, and he had just lost a member, so Etienne filled in for him. At the beginning of the novel, while he talks to Catherine, we can see that he did not distance himself much from the violence which is shown at the end of the novel when he gets into a confrontation.
